Dr Vicki Shaw
Dr Vicki Shaw is passionate about renewable energy and sustainability.

Currently working as a specialist in sustainable energy communities, a consultant in renewable energy applications, and a technical assessor in the fields of environmental management, energy management and greenhouse gas emissions.

Vicki Shaw graduated from Liverpool Hope University College in 1997 with a BA (Hons) in American Studies. During a year studying at the State University of New York in Potsdam, she became particularly interested in the impacts of industrial pollution on the traditional lifestyles of Native American communities. Vicki went on to graduate from Sheffield Hallam University in 1999 with an MSc. in Environmental Management for Business and Commerce, and later graduated in 2004 with a Ph.D. entitled ‘Measures to promote urban renewable energy use.’

Throughout her studies and career, Vicki has developed a multi-disciplinary background from working for private businesses and local authorities, through academic research and teaching, and from self employment as a consultant. Relevant experience includes: writing policy and strategic plans, community engagement and consultation, developing and implementing environmental management systems, writing and delivering educational courses and interactive training workshops, and carrying out environmental assessments and renewable energy feasibility studies.

Within the context of the UK’s commitment to reducing carbon dioxide emissions, Vicki’s Ph.D. investigated the nature of the problems, obstacles and complexities facing the implementation of renewable energy technologies in the built environment. Part of her research included an energy assessment of the relative potential contribution that energy efficiency measures and renewable energy resources could make to reducing carbon dioxide emissions from energy use within a city such as Sheffield.

Whilst completing her Ph.D., Vicki was appointed as the Community Renewable Energy Officer at the North York Moors National Park Authority where she was responsible for delivering carbon reduction through community-led sustainable energy initiatives. Vicki returned to Sheffield in 2006 to work as a Consultant, developing expertise in producing Life Cycle Assessments for a wide range of processes including the anaerobic digestion of organic wastes.

From 2007 to 2014, Vicki set up her own business and worked as a freelance Renewable Energy & Environmental Management Consultant. She provided impartial advice and guidance on energy reduction, behavioural change, energy efficiency measures and renewable energy options for community buildings and commercial premises. Vicki also became a fourth-party technical assessor for a number of ISO standards and schemes including ISO 17021, EN45011 (now ISO 17065), ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems, the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) and the Green Deal Scheme (Green Deal Advice Service & PAS2030 Green Deal Installers).

During this period, Vicki also worked for the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) for 18 months as an Assessment Manager on the pilot and roll-out Green Deal and Competent Person Schemes.

In her capacity as Director of Dr Vicki Shaw & Associates Limited, Vicki continues to specialise in renewable energy feasibility studies for businesses and community organisations.  She also works as an independent technical assessor & auditor in the fields of environmental management, energy management and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

Vicki is also an affiliate member of the Institute for Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) and gets regular updates/bulletins from the Energy Institute (EI).
